Oh yes you better believe I'm gonna talk about those cheat days. We all have them from time to time and it's only natural that we do. Sometimes we gotta have a way to treat ourselves after a hard day at work or a tough week. Now I'm sure that lots of people have their “go-to cheat foods” whenever the need to splurge arouses. However there are instances where I'd much rather eat something sweet as opposed to a food that is loaded with carbs.
Just this past week I had a cheeseburger coupled with a side of fries. While they both tasted great as I was devouring them in seconds it was about 3-4 hours afterwards that it hit me. All of a sudden I felt a really bad headache come on and a serious case of the “brain fog.” Needless to say I had to take some medicine to help with the pain which eventually led to me crashing early on in the night.
It made me wonder if a short-term burst of enjoyment was really worth the consequences thereafter. For me it was just a reminder as to why I don't carb-load very often and what my body does to me whenever I do. Of course I understand that everybody has different reactions to their cheat days but I would suggest that you proceed with caution when considering it. There also is a chance that having too many cheat days could kick you out of ketosis.
The funny thing is I usually have really good self control and hardly ever eat anything with tons of carb or heaps of sugar. I will admit that sometimes I do have extremely strong cravings for those foods on my cheat days but for me it's a case of mind over matter. Usually I ask myself “how am I going to feel 2 hours from now after I eat this?” Or even a more serious question might be “how is this going to affect my long term health 20 years from now?”
When it comes to what I'm putting into my body I think it's always important to think about your long term health. What you put in is what you’ll get out and it’s crucial to feed your body the fuel it needs. So the next time you think about having a cheat day just ask yourself “is it worth it?” Unless of course you had a bad day/week at work and eating that donut would really help put you at ease.
