Adversity is defined in the English Dictionary as: adverse or unfavorable fortune or fate; a condition marked by misfortune, calamity, or distress. There are many different forms of adversity and it really does vary from person to person. Getting fired might be one of the greatest forms of adversity but to every coin there are two sides. Life might give you heads one day only to give you tails the very next.
What I’m trying to say is that to every negative there is a positive, maybe you were hired for a job but things didn’t work out. Although you might be unemployed now you can look back on the experiences that you gained from that situation. It might be difficult, but your current and past experiences help you build towards the future.
Take for example an ant, an animal that many believe to be one of the greatest types of “builders” in the animal kingdom. When I was a kid I remember there used to be an ant hill in the field at my school. I used to watch the long lines of ants going to and from the ant hill, all of them marching along in rhythm. But one day I wanted to try something, what would happen if I broke the line of ants? So I put my hand down in the middle of the line, breaking the ceremonious pattern of ants. For a few seconds the ants were in a daze, but a few seconds later they miraculously began to climb over or around my hand. The line that was momentarily broken by my hand was reformed in a matter of seconds.
Sometimes we are like ants, moving along the path of life in a consistent line, only to be interrupted by the “hand of adversity.” But much like ants, we find a way to overcome the adversity and get back on the train tracks of life.
I’m not one for baseball quotes, but I do love this one by Vin Scully.
“Don’t be sad that it’s over, smile because it happened.”
